REVIEW BY LOUISE

This was the first book I have read by this author.

It is very much a coming of age book and spans throughout years of Valerie's life.  I thought it started out very slow at first.  It didn't capture me immediately and I felt like I had to push myself to read through the slow parts.  I don't ever like feeling like I'm forcing myself to read something, it makes it difficult to enjoy it.

I think some of the phrases used in Valerie's early years bothered me, 15 year olds don't think like that and some of it I felt was a little inappropriate at times and made me feel uncomfortable reading it.

Once I got past a certain part I found it slightly easier to carry on reading and by the end of the book I actually did find that I enjoyed the last 3/4 of the book.

Although I struggled with this at first I really found myself wanting to know what happens next, so I imagine I shall read the next book just to see what does happen.
